The Program

A Globe Year is a challenging, inspirational year filled with, cultural immersion, social impact, and personal discovery that allows you to explore the world, identify your passions, build your skills, and lead a life filled with adventure. The Fellowship consists of unique experiential travel journeys, and at each of the international locations, fellows will partake in a week-long region based excursion (In or out of country) as they familiarize themselves with their new surroundings. Program details are included below.

Leadership Development Training (1 Month)

Fellows will launch their Globe Year with a month-long leadership development training where they will learn the skills and strategies needed to succeed in a globalized economy from some of the finest companies, industry pioneers, and entrepreneurs the world has to offer. Fellows will adapt these techniques to their personal leadership styles, test theories, and gain practical knowledge as they begin their journeys.

Volunteer Placements (1 Month)

Fellows will begin their stay in-country by spending 1 month volunteering at an NGO. Common volunteer opportunities will include orphanage work, teaching, sports development, construction, etc. and we will aim to match fellows with programs based on interests and needs. While volunteering, fellows will learn about responsible approaches to international development, and will gain invaluable first-hand experience living & working with community members.

Global Design Challenge (1.5 Months)

Following their volunteer experiences, fellows will begin the Global Design Challenge element of their trip in the same country as their volunteer experience. During this time, fellows will learn the principles of design thinking as they begin preparing for a Startup weekend influenced challenge where they will each pitch a unique idea, form teams based on mutual interests, then attempt to create successful venture over the next few weeks.  Projects can range from a new social innovation, business idea, product, non-profit organizations, etc. Through this process, fellows will gain invaluable entrepreneurship and teamwork experience.

Consulting Practicuum (2.5 Months)

Fellows will work in teams on challenging 10-week consulting projects for non-profits, social businesses, or multi-national corporations. During this time, fellows will work with organizational leaders, make measurable impacts, and gain practical experience as they aim to address major challenges facing the partner organization or business.

Internship/Apprenticeship (2.5 Months)

In this portion of the trip, Globe Year Fellows will have the opportunity to both learn and apply their skills during a 10 week internship with one of our partner organizations abroad. This network shall continuously grow and expand, and fellows can request to work on internships with organizations or causes they are passionate about. In this time, fellows will gain marketable work experience, develop transferable skills, and build their understanding of cross-cultural business.

Passion Projects (2.5 Months)

In the last phase of their international adventure, fellows will work on an independent project based on their unique passions, interests, and goals. Fellows are encouraged to express their creativity during this process, and the projects can take multiple forms, and ideas range from creating documentaries, starting a business, analyzing social/cultural norms, and more. All projects will be pre-approved by program staff to ensure quality, and can be in any country the fellow would like.

Reintegration, Globe Year Symposium & Career Planning (1 Month)

New York City, the city of bright lights, endless energy, and limitless opportunity will be the final stop of the fellowship program. The time in NYC will serve as an opportunity for reflection on personal growth, achievements, and self-actualization. As a part of this reflection, fellows will celebrate their experiences through a presentation at the Globe Year Travel Learning Symposium to an audience of social innovators, corporate partners, educators, family, and friends. Following the symposium, fellows will spend time evaluating career interests and opportunities and shall receive personalized career advice from our coaches and team of experienced educators as they prepare to embark on the next adventure that life has to offer.

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” - Mark Jenkins
